The word 'contiguous' means touching, or adjacent. The term 'contiguous USA' is used to refer to the 48 states that have land borders with one or more other US states – i.e. excluding Alaska and Hawaii.
(The highest mountain in the contiguous states is actually higher than any in Hawaii. Only Alaska has mountains that are higher.)
